The student orientation phase is a crucial time in a student's academic career. It is typically held at the beginning of a new school year or just before classes begin. Helping new students adapt to the academic environment is the goal of the student orientation period. They are also made aware of the rules and regulations at school. Along with fostering a sense of belonging among both new and returning students. Gloria 1 Christian Junior High School hosted a similar event under the banner of "Let's Buckle Up With God's Lead." Student Orientation (MPLS) was held at Gloria 1 Christian Junior High School from July 11–12, 2023, from 07.30–12.45 WIB. A total of 111 students took part in the activity. On the first day, an opening ceremony was held, then on the second day parents were invited to take part in LOOT (Student Orientation Service) activities.
The introduction to student orientation is very important because the activities that take place during this time can make students feel more at ease and prepared to take on the challenges of a new school. Through MPLS, schools hope that new students can get the following benefits:
- 1. Introducing the New School Environment
For new students, an unfamiliar school environment can cause feelings of anxiety and stress. During the student orientation time, students have a chance to explore the school area, get to know the classrooms, laboratories, library and other facilities. In addition, they also had the opportunity to meet teachers and school staff so they could feel more familiar with the people around them.
- 2. Socialization and Fostering of Communities
The student orientation period usually includes a variety of social activities designed to help new students interact with peers and current students. These activities include games, group discussions, and other events that involve the active participation of students. Through these activities, new students can begin to form friendship bonds and feel more accepted in the school community.
- 3. Understanding School Rules and Regulations
- Growing Confidence
New students are also given the chance to speak in front of others, take part in team activities, and face other challenges during student orientation. These factors aid in their self-confidence development and assist them in overcoming any fear they may feel while entering a new educational environment.
- The Academic and Extracurricular Programs Introduction
The appropriate time to introduce the academic and extracurricular programs offered at the school is during the student orientation period. The courses they will study, chances for involvement in clubs and extracurricular activities, and the numerous programs the school offers can all be explained to new students.
New students' adjustment to a new school is significantly aided by the student orientation time. New students can feel more at ease, have a sense of community, and be prepared to face challenges in a new school environment through social activities, introduction to the school environment, comprehending norms, and academic programs. The student orientation period is an important first step in building a positive foundation for a student's educational journey.
